A great book for understanding the fundamentals of professional coaching; set out in a logical and visually pleasing format with content that should stimulate all preferred learning styles. The chapters are punctuated by exercises to help reinforce the learning. I have already found these exercises most useful for taking the learning into coaching conversations.
My particular favourite has been the ‘Deep Listening’ exercise which suggests that you spend a whole conversation listening to a learner describe 2-3 of their goals. During the conversation you can only ask clarifying questions. Then the last 10-15 minutes is for you to relay back what you understand about the learners goals. My experience has been that my listeners have really valued this space to vocalise what is really important to them, without me defaulting to ‘fix it’ mode, trying to dominate the conversation or talking about how my experiences are similar.
I read through the Coaching Manual quite quickly and therefore look forward to making time soon to revisit the exercises that I have identified as aiding my personal development. |
